The start order is determined strictly by the standing of the IOF Middle/Long Distance World Rankings as published on 23 August 2017* (leader starts last) with a start interval of 2 minutes. If more than 70 entries are received, start interval will be reduced to 90 seconds.

The leading 15 athletes from each heat qualify for the A final and the remaining competitors qualify for the B final, with the starting sequence in each final as determined by rule 12.9.
